Condition of China's Marine Economic Development in 2000

¡¡In 2000, the total output value of China¡¯s major marine industries has reached 413.350 billion yuan ( at current price, the same below), 8.3% up from that in the previous year (unless otherwise specified, the increase rate is calculated at the constant price of 1990). The added value of marine industries is 229.704 billion yuan, amounting to 2.6% of the national GDP of China. The national economy of the coastal cities and counties supported by marine economy has also seen a steady growth, its GDP amounting to 3 319.008 billion yuan, which occupies 60.1£¥ of the GDP of the entire coastal region, and 37.1% of the national GDP. The gross value of industrial output of the coastal cities and counties is 5 090.894 billion yuan, accounting for 63.8% of that of the entire coastal region. The gross output value of agriculture is 595.277 billion yuan, occupying 43.3% of that of the entire coastal region.

¡¡The gross output value of marine aquatic products industry has reached 208.434 billion yuan, registering an increase of 5.6% as against that in the previous year. The output of marine aquatic products has reached 25.3874 million tons, 2.7% more than that in the previous year. The output of marine fishing has reached 14.7745 million tons, having gone down a little as compared with that in the previous year, and thus the goal for resource conservation has basically been achieved. The area of mariculture has amounted to 1 244 thousand hectares, 13.7% up from that in the previous year. The per unit area yield of mariculture has reached 8 531 kg/hm2, reducing by 798 kg/hm2 as against that in the previous year due to the effect of natural disasters, and the total output of mariculture has reached 10.6129 million tons, 8.9% up from that in the previous year.

¡¡The gross output value of beach placer industry is 0.305 billion yuan, 242.7% up from that in the previous year (calculated by current price).

¡¡In recent years, as a result of the fact that the department concerned of the state practise the policy of limiting the salt production and reducing the stock, the salt industry has begun to turn loss into profit in 2000, thus reversing the trend of the total profit of the salt industry being on the negative rise for a dozen years. In 2000, the output of sea salt is 23.644 million tons, 15.3% up from that in the previous year and the gross output value of salt industry is 8.307 billion yuan, 0.9% up from that in the previous year.

¡¡The situation in the industry of marine communications and transportation is still gratifying. The freight turnover of marine transportation throughout the year is 2218.300 billion ton kilometres, 11.8% up from that in the previous year; the volume of cargo handled in the major coastal seaports has amounted to 1.256 billion tons, 19.4% up from that in the previous year. The operational income has reached 71.740 billion yuan, 25.2% up from that in the previous year (calculated at current prices).

¡¡The developing speed of coastal international tourism has somewhat picked up. Foreign exchange income is 7.658 billion US dollors (63.79 billion yuan RMB), registering an increase of 21.6% as against that in the previous year, and the total number of overseas tourists received for the whole year has amounted to 16.99 million person-times, 27.8% up from that in the previous year.

¡¡As the State has intensified the effort of environmental pollution prevention and control, and the coastal provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the Central Government) have paid more attention to the problem of environmental protection, and made great efforts to control the sewage discharged into the sea, the pollution of nearshore waters has been mitigated to some extent. In 2000, the total amount of industrial waste water directly discharged into the sea in the coastal regions is 824 million tons, 1.2% more than that in the previous year. But, in general, the prospects for the overall quality of marine environment are still not bright and so further efforts should be made to prevent and control marine environment pollution and protect the environment.

¡¡In 2000, China has 105 marine scientific research institutions, employing 14 626 marine staff and workers, of which 10 701 are professional and technical personnel, both having decreased as compared with those in the previous year. The number of research projects accomplished has amounted to 3 310, 1.8% down from that in the previous year.
