In 2002, the total output value of China's national marine
industries has reached
905.029 billion yuan, with a year-on-year increase of 9.2% (unless otherwise
specified, the increase rate is calculated at the constant price of 1990).The added
va1ue of national marine industries is 404.l53 billion yuan, accounting for 3.8% of
the national GDP of China. The national economy of the coastal cities and counties
supported by marine economy has seen a steady growth, its GDP amounting to
3 822.159 billion yuan, which occupies 56.6% of the GDP of the entire coastal
region, and 36.5% of the national GDP. The gross output value of industry and
agriculture of coastal cities and counties is 6 062.0l9 billion yuan, accounting for
67.4% of that of the entire coastal region and 43.9% of the national gross output
va1ue of industry and agriculture respectively. The gross output value of
marine aquatic products industry has reached
254.l03 bi1lion yuan, registering an increase of 6.9% as against that in the previous
year. The output of marine aquatic products has reached 26.463 4 mi1lion tons,2.9%
more than that in the previous year. The output of marine fishing has reached
l4.334 9 million tons, down 0.5% from that in the previous year, and thus the goal
for resource conservation has basically been achieved. The area of mariculture has
amounted to l 345 thousand hectares, up 4.5% from that in the previous year. The
per unit area yield of mariculture has reached 9 019 kg/hm2, increasing by 223
kg/hm2 as against that in the previous year, and the total output of
mariculture has
reached l2.l28 4 million tons, up 7.2% from that in the previous year.
The offshore oil and gas industry has returned to its trend of growth. Its
gross
output value has reached 36.053 billion yuan in 2002, up 1l.6% as against that in the
previous year the production of crude oil is 24.055 5 million tons, increasing by
l2.3% as against that in the previous year and the output of natural gas is 4.647
billion cubic metres, l.6% more than that in the previous year. The export of marine
crude oil has also gone up by 0.7l6 7 million tons and the foreign exchange earnings
through export have increased by l7.026 million US dollars.
The gross output value of beach placer industry is 0.464 billion yuan, up
46.3%
from that in the previous year (calculated by the current price).
As the production of sea salt has increased year by year, the situation
where
production exceeds marketing still exists in the salt industry. Although the
production of sea salt is 25.983 million tons in 2002, up l7.8% from the previous
year, affected by the drop of the price of industrial salts and other factors, the gross
output value of salt industry is only 9.004 billion yuan, down l.l% from the previous
year (calculated at the current price).
The coastal shipbuilding industry has continued to develop rapidly this year
The gross industrial output value of coastal shipbuilding has increased by 30.6% as
compared with that in the previous year the number of jobs has increased by l5 000,
up l2.7% from the previous year the economic benefits from the coastal
shipbuilding industry have also maintained a good posture and the number of ships
built or repaired has increased by 5.8% as against that in the previous year.
The development of the industry of marine communications and transportation
has maintained a gratifying momentum. The freight turnover of marine
communications and transportation throughout the year is 2 600.l9 billion ton
kilometers, up 6.3% from that in the previous year; the volume of cargo handled in
the major coastal seaports has amounted to 1.666 billion tons, up l6.8% from that in
the previous year. The operational income has reached 134.200 billion yuan, nearly
up 27.1% from that in the previous year (calculated at current prices).
In 2002, China's coastal tourism industry has kept on growing at a rapid rate.
The income from coastal tourism has amounted to 287.486 billion yuan, up 14.9% as
against that in the previous year, among which that from domestic tourism has
increased by l3.4% (calculated at the current price) and that from international
tourism by l8.7% (calculated at the current price). The total number of overseas
tourists received for the whole year has reached 2l.36 million person-times, up
13.6% from that in the previous year. The number of star--level tourist guesthouses
has somewhat increased, 244 more than that in the previous year and the hiring rate
of guest rooms has also increased by 3.5 percentage points.
In 2002, the gross output value of the marine chemical industry in the coastal
region is l0.375 billion yuan, up 36.0% from that in the previous year; the gross
output value of the marine biological pharmaceutical and health products industry
has reached 4.743 billion yuan, up l27.3% as against that in the previous year; the
gross output value of the marine electric power and seawater desalination industry is
50.754 billion yuan, up 20.5% from that in the previous year; the gross output value
of the marine engineering architecture is l0.6 billion yuan, nearly six times that in
the previous year, the gross output value of the marine information service industry
is 0.30 million yuan, with an added value of 0.l8 million yuan; and the gross output
value of other marine industries has amounted to 67.656 billion yuan, up 57.9% from
that in the previous year (The growth rates of the above--mentioned marine industries
are all calculated at the current price.)
The output value of the major marine industries in the coasta1 provinces,
autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government is on
be rise with Guangdong province still ranking first in the marine economic
development, whose output value of marine industries has reached 169.37l billion
yuan. Zhejiang province second and Fujian province third (see the table below).

As the State has intensified the effort of environmental pollution
prevention and
control, and the coastal provinces (autonomous regions, and municipalities directly
under the Central Government) have paid more attention to the problem of
environmental protection, and made great efforts to control the sewage discharged
into the sea, the po11ution of nearshore waters has been mitigated to some extent. In
2002, the major superstandard item in the littoral sea area is inorganic nitrogon and
the up-to-standard rate of the industrial waste water discharge in the coastal region is
94.7%, 4 percentage points up from the previous year. But, in general, the prospects
for the overall quality of marine environment are still not bright and so further efforts
should be made to prevent and control marine environment pollution and protect the
environment.
The marine scientific research institutions have continued to
deepen their
reform. The number of marine staff and workers employed has been reduced by more
than 150, but the scientific research projects have increased by 139 as compared with
the previous year, and the force of scientific research in the field of basic sciences
has been strengthened. Among others, the projects in basic research, applied research
and experimental development have over 290 more than those in the previous year,
with a growth rate of l6.2%.
To meet the needs of the development of marine undertakings and
strengthen
training of marine hi-tech professionals, the number of specialties conferring doctors'
and masters' degrees has increased by 29 as compared with the previous year, with
an enrollment of over 300 students more than that in the previous year; and the
marine specialties for regular and junior college students have increased by l5, with
an increase of enrollment of over l300 as against that in the previous year, which
fully shows that the development of marine economy and marine scientific
undertakings has an adequate reserve force. |
